Every time you open the bonnet of your car to check the oil, you are involved in an aspect of Test Diagnostic Lubricants. As you inspect the common parameters of:

  • The level: Low, High or Normal
  • The Appearance: Clear, too Dark, too Viscous, too Light, some water...
  • The Smell: Odorless, Burnt, fuel-Like...

You aim to ensure that they fall within "acceptable" limits in the best way you know how. Any abnormalities observed send warning signals whose cause/s you try to establish and rectify before the engine performance goes chaotic...
This is called in-service oil follow-up. It is the art of tracking down changes as they occur in a lubricating oil while it is in use with the aim of ensuring normalcy. The concept of oil follow-up in service is as old as the concept of engine Lubrication. It has only changed with time in sophistication, precision and scope of application.

TotalEnergies Marketing Kenya TDL lab carries out the following tests, whose results are presented in an easy way of interpretation and are sent electronically to the consumers;

  • Viscosity tests –Viscosity is determined at 40 oC and 100 oC. The viscosity Index is then determined.
  • Carbon content – determines the level of oxidation of the oil
  • Additives determination – Establishes the depletion of the additives in the oil
  • TBN – the basicity of the oil. The ability of the oil to neutralize acids arising from high sulphur fuels
  • Dispersancy – Test to establish the ability of the oil to clean the equipment
  • Wear metals – Determines the level of wear in the equipment. Traces of certain metals gives a hint of wearing components in the equipment
  • Silicon – gives an indication of the level of air filtration
  • Water – Contaminates the oil and presence of water is not good for the oil
  • Sodium – Usually coming from sea water in the cooling circuits
