One Person One Event One Tree

There are now over 3,000 tree planting projects registered with the Total Eco Challenge every one of them, a demonstration of great effort and determination.

Three years ago the Eco Challenge added the concept of "One Person, One Event, One Tree," encouraging people to mark every important moment in their lives…… weddings, births, funerals, a new job, a new house, a new car, passing an exam…… by planting a tree.

In 2007 the campaign achieved its target of 100 million trees per year. Todate over 500 million trees have been planted. During the Eco Challenge annual gala awards ceremony in Nairobi, Total Kenya Managing Director Felix Majekodunmi said  "Kenya is literally changing its landscape and embedding tree-planting as a part of its culture. What has done this? YOU have. Whatever happens out there; whatever the numbers add up to; Kenya is planting trees with unprecedented vigour and passion because you have made a personal commitment and delivered with personal effort. "

He added "You are the Total Eco Challenge, and it is your inspiration and action that has turned an idea into a project, a project into a campaign, and enabled that campaign to grow into nothing less than a national movement."

"It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to the sixth annual gala awards of the Total Eco Challenge, where we gather as a truly national - and nationwide - team to review our progress and to honour the most outstanding efforts and achievements of the past year."

"When Total first announced its challenge to all Kenyans, to plant 100 million trees per year, most people doubted that we would ever be able to achieve such a number. They thought that raising awareness and that inspiring and enabling action on that scale would be too big a problem. And we do have a problem. Kenyans are planting so many trees in so many places that we cannot count them! Let me give you a perspective from what we can count: "

"There are now more than 3,000 separate groups registered with the Total Eco Challenge.
We have the name and address of every one. We have physically checked the on-the-ground action
of most. Some of those are single schemes; others are umbrellas for several dozen projects.
Each. Some are small; others involve several thousand people. Each.
Clearly, many millions of individual Kenyans are now directly involved. "
